LDAP

The purpose of this site is to get me my Masters in Science degree in the University of Greenwich. Since the research can be valuable to some, this website is featuring extracts from that research. Some of the issues investigated here are not well documented. For the history, the project was successful. A big thanks to Dr Mohammed Dastbaz and to Mrs Joan Knight from the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Greenwich.

The LDAP is a very interesting technology, especially within the context of the web hosting business sector. It allows such companies to develop effective management applications for multi-user and multi-environment Information Systems. Such a system is widely known as a control panel.

The material that can be found here serve only as introductory material which prove the concept through theoretical analysis and practical examples. The time available for this research is limited and any contributions can be greatly welcome.

The concepts involved are quite vague. Every attempt has been made to go through all of it and provide the reader with a clear picture of what I am trying to accomplish. Reading through the introductory material can help you get the bigger picture and the flexibility of the technologies used.

Perhaps the most important issue here is the use of Directory Technology and the LDAP protocol to deliver a multi-management information system which provides functionality to different types of users who need to perform certain daily operations.

"In computer networking, the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, or LDAP ("ell-dap"), is a networking protocol for querying and modifying directory services running over TCP/IP. An LDAP directory usually follows the X.500 model: it is a tree of entries, each of which consists of a set of named attributes with values. While some services use a more complicated "forest" model, the vast majority use a simple starting point for their database organization," from the Wikipedia's Lightweight Directory Access Protocol

This project evaluates the suitability of such technology for implementing and delivering a competitive "control panel" application which can be provided to web hosting services companies to manage their network services and for their customers to manage the administrative aspects of their domain hosting accounts.

Due to the use of freely available technology, the proposed system could provide substantial benefits to the end users, as compared to the competition, by providing an application which uses less system resources, is stable and which can be delivered at a fraction of the cost of what other similar software vendors charge.

Possibly even an Open-Source control panel... I am waiting for your ideas and thoughts on this... Feel free to add comments and to contact me (pavlos (AT) artzweb dot net). Thanks for passing by!
